What "Research Use Only" Means — and What It Doesn't
Every product on this site carries the same designation. Here is what it means legally and practically, without the hedging.
Published 2026-09-18 · APX Labs Research Desk · For laboratory research context only — not medical advice.
'Research use only' means the material is sold as a laboratory reagent for in-vitro and research work. It is not a drug, supplement, cosmetic or food; it is not manufactured, labelled, tested or approved for administration to humans or animals; and no claim of effect is made. The buyer takes on responsibility for lawful handling and use.
The designation
Research use only (RUO) is a labelling and regulatory category. An RUO product is supplied for laboratory research — analytical work, in-vitro assays, animal-model research under appropriate institutional oversight — and for nothing else. The designation appears on every APX Labs product page, on the label, on the COA, and in the research-use policy every buyer agrees to.
What it means in regulatory terms
In the United States, a substance becomes a *drug* by its intended use — if it is marketed to diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate or prevent disease, or to affect the structure or function of the body. RUO materials are not marketed for any such use, so they are not drugs; they are also not dietary supplements, cosmetics, or foods. Consequently they are not evaluated or approved by the FDA, and the FDA has not reviewed their safety or effectiveness for any purpose, because no such purpose is claimed.
This is also why the wording on this site is careful. A product page says a compound is *studied for* or *referenced in* a research area, with citations to the literature. It never says the compound *does* something to a body. That is not evasiveness; it is the line between a research reagent and an unapproved drug claim.
What RUO covers
- Sale to laboratories, researchers, and qualified business accounts for research purposes
- Documentation of what the material is: identity, purity, lot, COA
- Handling guidance for laboratory use — storage, reconstitution, stability
What RUO does not cover
- Human or veterinary use of any kind. RUO material is not made to pharmaceutical (cGMP) standards, is not sterile-filled for administration, and carries no safety data for use in a body.
- Dosing, administration or protocol guidance. APX Labs does not provide it, on this site or by any other channel.
- Claims of effect. Citing a study about a compound is not a claim that the product produces that effect.
Buyer responsibilities
By ordering, a buyer represents that they are a qualified researcher, laboratory, or business purchasing for laboratory research, and that they will comply with all federal, state and local laws that apply to them — including handling, disposal, and any institutional requirements. Stocking partners agree additionally to present products consistently with this designation and to make no health or treatment claims.
How APX Labs documents compliance
The RUO designation on every label and page; the research-use policy and terms; batch-specific COAs so that what was sold is fully documented; and literature citations on product pages that are real, verifiable PubMed records — never invented, never paraphrased into a claim.
If a product page anywhere — here or elsewhere — reads as if it is telling you what a research chemical will do for you, it has crossed the line this article describes.
